PIONA
This boatride gives you the possibility of admiring the beautiful mountain scenery around the northern part of the lake. At Piona the waters, through an 100 m wide entrance, penetrate into a little inner lake with a surface of 1 square km. Here stands the abbey of Piona kept by the Cisterian Monks. The Abbey is of great historical and artistic interest. Ask for the leaflet on the abbey.

TREMEZZO
Tremezzo extends itself between the shores of the lake and the beautiful hilly hinterland at the foot of Monte Crocione A lovely walk leading through the upper part of Tremezzo is the one from Lenno to Griante. Ask for route description n° 13. Among the antique sumptuous villas that you find in the Tremezzo area outstands the world famous "Villa Carlotta" of the 18 century with its marvellous park with rare plants and trees of many kinds. In April and May one can admire the Azalea and Rhododendron flowering. Also the inside of the villa, with its prominent art collection such as sculptures by Canova, paintings by Hayez, is open to the public: . Since more than 10 years, every Friday night during the summer months, an international revue of chamber music is held in the villa. At the end of the town (direction Como) there is a lovely public park directly on the lake. The leaflet “historic itinerary through Tremezzo” will describe you the numerous attractions of this town.

LENNO
The town Lenno lies around the beautiful bay called "Baia di Venere", formed by the peninsula Lavedo. On its lovely lake-side promenade every Tuesday a nice market is held. The town treasures several religious buildings considered important works of art. There is for example the crypt of the parish church S Stefano in the centre of the town facing the Romanesque baptistery of S. Giovanni. In the upper part of town stands the monastery of Acquafredda with its lively frescos. Detailed information is given in the leaflet “Historic itinerary through Lenno”. From the monastery of Acquafredda you can reach the monastery "San Benedetto" in Val Perlana, an important Romanesque building. . On the far end of the peninsula Lavedo stands the villa Balbianello built in the 17th century on order of Cardinal Angelo Durini. Its beautiful gardens are open to the public from , Monday and Wednesday closed. About 200 m from the landing stage at Lenno, close to the Lido of Lenno, there is a regular motorboat service to the villa. Only on Tuesday Saturday and Sunday the villa can be reached by foot (1km from the boat landing stage). Highly recommendable is the small circular walk to the Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso situated at 400m at the beginning of the Val Perlano; an alley with 14 chapels leads to the church. Ask for the leaflets on the walks!

ISOLA COMACINA
The Comacina Island is the only Island of lake Como. It lies in front of the towns Osuccio and Sala Comacina. Except for the church of San Giovanni nothing but ruins remain today of the many old religious buildings of the Island, which were destroyed during the war between Milan and Como in the 12 century. Of great interest are the ruins of the Basilica S. Eufemia. Ask for the leaflet on the hiHistory of the Island. We highly reccomend to combine this excursion with a visit to the roman churches of Ossuccio. ask for the leaflet.

ARGEGNO
Argegno is situated at the beginning of the "Val d'Intelvi". Part of the town Argegno has maintained its medieval structure. There is an antique bridge at the point where the original roman road "Via Regina" used to pass. There is a funicular which takes you to the village Pigra (860 m) situated on the slope above Argegno from where you get an extraordinary view of the lake, and the surrounding mountains . There is a combined boat and cable car ticket which can be bought the Navigazione Lago di Como ticket offices. From Pigra one can take a beautiful hike to the settlement Corniga and from there down to Colonno, Sala Comacina and Spurano.

COMO
This trip gives you the possibility of admiring lake Como's beautiful villas which are situated mainly on this branch of the lake and are difficult to see from the road. The boat stops at lots of picturesque little towns on its way. On the townmap of Como, available at the Tourist Office, its main monuments are indicated: the cathedral, the church S.Fedele, the church S.Abbondio, Villa Olmo, il Tempio Voltiano, the towers and the medieval walls, all with a brief description. Como has many fashionable shops and mind that every Saturday (all day), Tuesday and Thurday (morning only) there is a big market. In order to have a spectacular view of the town, we reccomend a ride up the funicular to Brunate.

BELLAGIO
Bellagio is situated on the watershed peninsula between the two branches of Como and Lecco. Its extraordinary position and its little alleys with numerous shops, make it an enchanting place. Also here Lombardy aristocrats had there villas built; closed on Monday; reservations for the visit must be made at the office of the Promobellagio in Piazza della Chiesa 15 min. before the guided visit starts). The leaflet on the “villas of the central lake area” gives you a description of these villas. In able to know more about Bellagio’s monuments ask for the historic itinerary through the town. A nice walk of about 2 hours is the one leading through some of the characteristic suburbs of Bellagio, ask for route description n°10.

LECCO
The town is situated at the lower end of the eastern branch of the lake and stretches along the eastern bank of the river Adda. In its historical centre, one can still see the ruins of the city walls, the moat which closed off the Medieval town and also the imposing bridge built between 1336 and 1338 by Azzone Visconti. The ancient via Cavour leads to square named after Garibaldi where there is the theatre Sociale and eventually reaches the narrow square Piazza XX Settembre where the Visconti tower stands now museum and exhibition centre. The nobility used to live in the castle (Palazzo Belgioioso), today Museum of Archaeology and Natural Sciences open from Tuesday to Sunday . Another important building is the Museo Manzoniano, once residence of the Manzoni family, displaying manuscripts of the famous writer Alessandro Manzoni, who wrote the master piece “I Promessi Sposi” – the Betrothed, works of art and original furniture of the period. Open from Tuesday to Sunday . Every Wednesday and Saturday there is a market at Lecco.

VARENNA
On your way to Varenna the boat crosses the middle of the lake, there where the 3 branches of the lake - Como, Lecco, Alto Lago - meet. Varenna is a peaceful, picturesque little town. One can visit the gardens of Villa Monastero and of Villa Cipressi open from the ;you can also visit the “Casa Museo” (inside) of Villa Monastero. In order to have a beautiful view of Varenna and the central lake area, we highly recommend the walk to the "Castello di Vezio" , castle built in the 13th century. The castle is open to the public from the beginning of April till the end of October every day from till sunset; - there is a leaflet on the castle. We also recommend the walk to the source of "Fiume Latte", Italy's shortest river; ask the for the leaflet with the itinerary.

BELLANO
Bellano is an important centre situated on the east shore of the lake, around the mouth of the river Pioverna. The village-centre has maintained its original urban structure with characteristic little streets. Every Thurday there is a market. In the parish church SS. Nazara,Celso and Giorgio you find many frescos of the 15th century. Not far from the parish church there is the "Orrido", a deep gorge formed by the Pioverna stream. Stairs have been built on the rocks leading into the gorge which makes it possible to admire the power of the water from close-by (open from the 1st of April till the end of September every day. Very nice is the walk from Bellano to Dervio on the “Sentiero del Viandante ) Ask for the route description.

DERVIO
The best known part of Dervio is its hamlet Corenno Plinio with its medieval centre formed by the castle built in 1363 by the Andreani family and the church San Tommaso di Canterbury. Partly resting against the façade of the church and partly against the wall of the castle, one can see the tombs of the Andreani family, three gothic styled arches. From the church square steep alleys and rocky steps lead down to the lake from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the northern part of the lake. On the opposite bank of the lake, one can see Santa Maria Rezzonico dominated by the ruins of the Castle della Torre. From the boat dock at Dervio you can reach Corenno Plinio in about 1 hour by foot by following a short stretch of the “Sentiero del Viandante”, the old connection track between Lecco and Colico.

DONGO
Dongo is situated on the north west shore of the lake. One of the reasons that made it an important centre, was the road leading through the Valle Albano behind the town to the S. Jorio pass that connected the northern end of the lake with Switzerland. Its centre has maintained its antique urban structure. Of interest are the parish church S.Stefano (ask for the leaflet) and in the square facing the lake you find the neoclassical "Palazzo Manzi". Every first and third Wednesday there is a market. There is a bus connection (line C17) with Stazzona, a small village situated on the slope above Dongo, where there are many 'Crotti" (natural cellars in the mountainside) many open only in August, where you can try the local wine and cuisine. From Dongo, behind the S. Stefano church, you can follow the lovely lake side promenade and walk within 50 minutes to Gravedona. Suggestion for a full day in the northern lake area: in the morning take bus line C10 direction Colico to Dongo (there are no boats in the morning). After the visit of the town walk to Gravedona. After the visit of Gravedona cross the lake with the boat to Piona. After seeing the Abbazia di Piona take the boat back to the central lake area.

GRAVEDONA
Gravedona is an important centre on the north-west shore of the lake, rich with history and art. The XII century church S. Maria del Tiglio which stands somewhat away from the built up area, is one of the most important Romanesque buildings of the province. Of large interest are also the churches S. Maria delle Grazie with frescos of the 14th and 15th century and the one dedicated to the saints Gusmeo and Matteo with frescos by Fiamminghino of the 16th century. Ask for the leaflets on the two churches at the Tourist Office; during the summer guided visits of the churches are organized. In the centre of the town, on the lake, stands the Palazzo Gallio, built in the 15th century as the summer residence of Cardinal Tlomeo Gallio. In this impressive palace with its towers and loggia during the summer months the Pianomaster Festival is held. Highly recommended is the walk from Gravedona to Domaso (1.30 hrs) which leads up to the hamlet Segna offering a splendid view on the northern end of the lake; ask for the leaflet. Every first and third Wednesday there is a market at Gravedona and every first and third Tuesday at Domaso.
