"Rifugio il Giovo and Rifugio S.Jorio"
Magnificent but strenuous ride because of its length and ascent, over quite easy tracks along the valley of S.Jorio through splendid woods and alpine pastures. From passo S.Jorio, you have an awesome view of the Valtellina, the Pizzo di Gino mountain ridge, Lake Lugano and the northern part of Lake Maggiore.

Route: from DONGO (208 m) near the little church “dei Frati”, you pick up the road leading up to GERMASINO, GARZENO. In the village of GARZENO (662 m) you clearly see the deviation for S.ANNA and BOCCHETTA DI GERMASINO. The road leads up in bends along the slope of the mountain. Having passed the locality of S.ANNA, it runs around the ridge of Monte Cortafon before arriving at BOCCHETTA DI GERMASINO (1.239 m), between the Val Dongana and the Valley of S.Jorio. From here starts the long track (approx. 10 km long) leading to Rifugio Il Giovo and to the S.Jorio pass. It leads half way up the mountain slope through the woods and along the splendid alpine pastures of BRUNEDO, MOTTAFOIADA and BASCIARINO. Having passed MOTTA LARICI (1.400 m), the track leads up in bends to the top of MOTTO DI PARAONE. Once out of the woods you reach LA MUTATA ARDALLA. From here the track runs along the ridge to RIFUGIO IL GIOVO (1.714 m) - refuge without management; for information apply to the alpine club (C.A.I.) Dongo. From the refuge you follow the track leading to the right, on the side of the S.Iorio valley. It goes up gradually half way up the slope among pastures. You then reach a building which used to be a barracks and has now been turned into a refuge (rifugio S.Jorio) open from 20/6 till 30/9 every day - October on Saturday and Sunday. Closeby, on the Swiss-Italian border, is the mountain pass of S.Jorio (2.014 m). On the Italian side of the pass stands the little chapel dedicated to S.Jorio.
For the return trip we recommend the same route.
